JenksDev by started by me, Ben Jenkins, a WordPress enthusiast. Throughout the website you'll see the term ‘we' used. That's because JenksDev is no longer just a one man business. With that in mind, let me tell you a little more about myself. As the team grows, a new section of the website will be added to meet the team.
About Ben Jenkins
I’m a website builder (I'm not a fan of the term Web developer, you'll see why in a minute) based in Cheltenham. I've been building websites since 2005 but only discovered how much I loved WordPress in 2015.
With WordPress being updated frequently, there's always something new to learn and build on. Not sure what WordPress is? Take a look at my WordPress Website Services to find out why I recommend it so much.
Touching upon the avoidance of the term ‘web developer’, I avoid it for a very simple reason: too many people claim to be developers. I've seen people snap a website together with Wix and Weebly and offer their services as a top class web developer. In my eyes, a developer is someone who creates everything, be it a website or a piece of software, from the ground up. I use tried and tested frameworks to build on, with Child Themes. The simplest way to explain a Child Theme would be to liken them to a car…
WordPress is your engine. It is what powers the website.
The frameworks that I work with form the basic chassis. This makes the car sturdy and driveable.
A car without a few doors and bumpers would be pretty offensive to the eyes wouldn't it? Child Themes add all of the doors, bumpers and pretty much everything else that you need to make sure your website looks great.
I also think that some people use the term developer to make them sound more professional so that they can charge more. My aim is to ensure that all services are affordable to all sizes of businesses, and to not scare anyone anyway with the use of a single word.
Experience and career
I am currently the Web Development and Marketing Manager at JPW Racing Tipster Limited during the day and build websites through JenksDev Limited in the evenings and weekends. This is fantastic for you. It means that I have no expensive office to run or any other large overheads. This means that I can keep my costs low and ensure that my prices are reasonable and affordable for businesses of all sizes. I have other people who work for and with JenksDev, but the main work does take place in the evenings.
Why I built this website using a third party theme
I anticipated this question and have been asked a handful of times – ‘if you build websites, why didn't you build one yourself? Why did you use a theme built by someone else? ‘
In all fairness, it’s a good question.
I was building my website and noticed an email come from StudioPress, the creators of Genesis, advertising a new theme – Corporate Pro. Some time ago I purchased the Pro package from StudioPress, meaning that I have access to all themes, so I decided to test it out. Normally, I wouldn't have done, but it was about 95% similar to website that I was building myself and that I had drawn up mock designs of.
So, upon testing the theme I realised that it was extremely well coded and loaded quickly, even after adding my own code, content and images.
I did add some custom code to manipulate the theme slightly but I loved what I saw when I first tested it, so I stuck with it after my minor adaptations.
You can see websites that I have created myself in my Portfolio.
During your relationship with JenksDev, 99% of the time you will be communicating with me, Ben. So I only feel it's right that you get to know me a little better with some interesting (or completely random) facts…
Steak, Burgers and Pizza. It's hard to choose. In the blog area you'll find that I use food as examples when explaining things.
I'm a massive fan of the Harry Potter and Marvel series. I've just booked to visit the Harry Potter studio tour for the fourth time.
I was born on Internaut Day. This is the day that Sir Tim Berners-Lee released the World's first publicly available website.
